As this was my first time in Italy, I started drooling as soon as my partner and I started searching for a restaurant for lunch. There are endless options, all of which looked fantastic! After a lot of walking around, we came across L’Isola Della Pizza which had a lovely street side patio and we decided this was the spot! The interior of the restaurant was designed quite differently, they had all of the ingredients on display. It almost looked like they offered a buffet.
The first thing that caught my eye was that a full size bottle of rose wine was only $15 (CAD)! I had truly found my happy place in Italy. We (of course) ordered the bottle and began our Italian vacation. The wine was surprisingly tasty! If we were in Canada and saw a bottle of wine this cheap in a restaurant I would have been very skeptical, however this needed no caution (except that it went down too smoothly!).
While in Italy, you must eat as much bread dipped in olive oil and balsamic vinegar as possible.. it is a rule…. that I just made up…. so it is definitely legitimate!! I don’t know what makes it taste so much better there, but we ate the whole basket of bread before our appetizers made it to the table, and somehow it didn’t spoil our meal.
We went classic Italian for appetizers, a plate of prosciutto & fresh mozzarella, and a couple of arancini (which are rice balls with cheese inside that have been deep fried). Well, those didn’t last long as you can imagine. They were really crispy and cheesy, pure heaven. The prosciutto and mozzarella was equally as amazing, best I’ve ever had, both so soft and flavourful. Truly wonderful.
As my main I ordered the Pizza Diavola, a spicy salami pizza. The crust was perfectly thin, crispy and huge! But oh my, I had no idea they were going to be that big. The flavour from the tomato sauce was light and fresh, with just a hint of spicy from the salami. I did cut up the big pieces of salami to be able to able to have a bit of salami with every bite.
Our server was hilarious, definitely working every angle he had to get a good tip out of the tourists. He was on the ball the entire time, and always seemed to be close by when we needed him. The food also came out really quickly, it was great service all around.
With the fantastic wine, food and service, our first Italian meal gets 5/5 stars.
Until next time,
