The Grounds Cafe is located in Murray’s Premises on Portugal Cove Road, approximately 15 minutes from downtown St. John’s. It is a beautifully bright and vibrant room, filled with lots of plants of all sizes. I’m new to owning and caring for plants, and I quickly became obsessed. Whenever I walk into the cafe it instantly makes me want to buy more plants and turn my house into a jungle! There is also locally crafted items such as pottery, books, clothing and jewelry available for purchase.
There is no table service here, you order at the counter (like a coffee shop), and they give you a table marker to bring with you to your table. When your food is ready, they will bring it to the table for you. My favourite thing about The Grounds Cafe is that it is farm to table, meaning they only serve items that are fresh and local. It makes such a difference because in Newfoundland & Labrador sometimes it is hard to get fresh ingredients due to transportation time on the ferry, so having a place to go for breakfast / lunch that you know will be as fresh as possible is really a treat! This means that their menu changes almost daily, so you never know what options you’re going to have. There is usually a soup, sandwich, flat bread pizza, a vegan salad option, cookies and treats etc.
I’ve been here at least 4 time now, and every time its been packed! It is such a popular meeting spot for lunch, or even to grab a coffee and snack to go. Even when it’s busy, they are quick to get your order to the table.
I’m going to include 2 of my past meals in this blog entry, because why not! The first lunch I had the Ham & Cheese on a Country Biscuit, and we shared an order of the potato wedges. I was instantly in love with it after the first bite. The biscuit was a little firm on the outside, while being perfectly fluffy on the inside.
The potato wedges were coated in a very flavourful BBQ seasoning. I find BBQ seasonings tend to be overly salty, however whatever mixture they are using was not salty at all, simply pure BBQ flavour.
The second meal I had was a P.E.I Beef Burger with the same potato wedges as before. I got there around noon and right after I ordered, I heard that they were sold out of the burgers!! Thankfully I got there when I did, because this burger was absolutely fantastic. It had Five Brothers Cheddar cheese, homemade ketchup, caramelized onions and fresh local greens. The bun was probably the best burger bun I’ve ever had, it had a croissant / brioche consistency, very very yummy!
If you haven’t gone to The Grounds Cafe yet you must! Everyone in St. John’s talks about it, and now you all know why! Their hours are a bit weird so be sure to look at them before you go. Not surprisingly I’m giving them 5/5 stars! It’s honestly that good, I got hungry simply thinking about it.
Until next time,
