Merchant Tavern, located in Downtown St. John’s is part of the Raymonds Restaurant Group which also owns the award winning Raymonds. Chef Jermey Charles is one of the masterminds behind both establishments. If you haven’t heard of him, I highly recommend googling him to take a look at his culinary journey. Chef Charles was featured on Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, Season 11 Episode 3, when Anthony visited Newfoundland. It was an awesome episode of this series, it’s always cool to see your town being shown on TV.
I think my favourite part of the dining experience here is the building itself. It was remodelled from an old bank, and the cool part is the vault is still there! I’ve seen/heard you can request to dine inside the vault for smaller parties, I’m not 100% sure the process of that though.
Even though this is my favourite part of the experience, I regret to say that I do not have any photos of the interior of the building. It is always SO busy, and I can’t bring myself to take a photo and have a bunch of unsuspecting people in the background. But you can go on their website to see it, or better yet just go check it out for yourself. It has super high ceilings, and the walls are wood. It’s a great combo of modern / industrial mixed with the added touch of the giant wall mounted moose head!
Having dined here for Brunch, Lunch & Dinner, I can assure you that you will be in for a treat! This particular review is from Brunch. Being a girl that doesn’t enjoy breakfast food (I know.. I’m weird), Brunch that is more like breakfast than lunch doesn’t really interest me, so I don’t tend to go to places that offer more lunch options. However, my partner wanted to check out Merchant Tavern for brunch as every other meal we’ve had there was fantastic. Long story short, let me tell you, it was amazing!
Ray Bonia’s Pancake Stack was 1. Huge & 2. Hands down the best pancakes I’ve ever had (sorry mom!). Three fluffy circles of pure heaven. I might sounds like I’m exaggerating but I’m really not. Pure heaven. The bacon was nice and crispy, and it gave that perfect sweet and salty combination with the maple syrup. Yum!
Service here is always great, the staff knows the menu very well and they check back in frequently. For being a higher class restaurant the staff is more causal which is really nice. I love their T-Shirts, super cute (you can purchase them if you like).
For this experience (and every other one I’ve had here), I give Merchant Tavern 5/5 stars!
Until next time,
